This post is a washup of Wednesday October 21st and Sunday October 25th Xocai training calls with Malcolm Peters and I, where I cover some additional essentials that we didn't have time for. Firstly, regarding advertising and publicising your blog and getting it up in the rankings. Remember that what you want is links TO your blog. So, if you are a member of an online community like Xarah's Chocolate Warrior or any of the other thousands of business groups on Ning, make SURE that your blog is linked from your member page. Don't just put the URL, say what your users can expect to find in your blog. For example you could say this:
http://hotchocprofits.blogspot.com - My blog on the personal inside track of being a Xocai distributor.
Read my previous post because there is a lot in there that didn't get covered in the call. Note that I have changed my blog layout so that there is a 'Read more' after an introductory paragraph. That is one way to keep your readers' attention and spark their interest.
Planning. I touched on that, but can't emphasise enough how important it is when starting a blog. Work out what your first post is going to be AND your second. Type every post in draft, write it longhand whatever. Experiment with themes, remember I said that with hindsight Wordpress is better? One of the reasons I say that is that the choice of themes and layouts is wider, the way your blog is controlled and edited is better, and you can create something that looks more like a 'standard' website.
Have a look at a blog I worked on earlier this year for comparison http://havantlitfest.wordpress.com
Note how the overall menu at the top includes a link to every page. I didn't do that - Wordpress does it for you - automatically. You also get really good stats, out of the box - so you know which links and advertising is driving traffic to your blog - free. The only 'off the menu special' we did with the Literary Festival blog was to pay Wordpress a little $5 sub to be able to tweak some really little things like the font, and what size our sub-headings came out. Another good thing with Wordpress is that you can create draft posts and private pages so YOU can see how your blog will look before you put it in the public domain.
Sketch out a layout, include some pictures. Pile up Xocai chunks or squares in a pretty bowl and snap them with your mobile phone or digital camera. Make a habit of carrying a notebook around with you everywhere and let that be the birthplace of your posts. Half a dozen bullet points written in your coffee break if you work outside your home, on the bus or train, whenever - that's the basis for your next post.
If I am talking total technical gobbledegook to you but you still want to blog - write me a comment here, contact me via my profile page and ask me to help or to get you started. We'll work something out and it won't cost an arm and a leg.
One of the reasons that Xocai is such a FANTASTIC business is that people help each other, even if they aren't in the same team. Hey, you out there thinking about joining this business, did you read that? Do you get that from the business you are in now?
There will be another post along in a day or two which will really surprise you.
